Food Packaging and Food Contact Materials

Globalization makes it easy for consumers to pick and choose from the best products worldwide. Regulatory framework becomes increasingly more stringent in every country and region, in favour of the safety and health of the population and a sustainable development. The Authorities impart civil and penal liability upon manufacturers, importers and brand owners.

Specifically in the industry of concern, any product or materials intended to come into contact with food shall not:

• Endanger human health

• Cause any unacceptable change in the composition of the foodstuffs

Cause any deterioration of the organoleptic characteristics of the foodstuffs

Cosmetics Packaging

According to Article 17 of European Cosmetic Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, non-intended small quantities of prohibited substances migrating from packaging to the cosmetic products shall be permitted provided that they are technically unavoidable and do not endanger human health. However, detailed requirements on how such migration shall be analysed or assessed are not provided by the Regulation. Nevertheless, the assessment of impurities traces and information about the packaging is a mandatory part of the product safety report.

Madison Safety’s advice cosmetic manufacturers to establish their safety assessment on:

Packaging materials which fulfil legal obligations defined for food packaging like EU Framework Regulation (EU) No 1935/2004 and EU Plastic Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011

REACH declaration certifying the absence of substances of very high concern

EU waste directive 94/62/EC

Medical Devices Packaging

In addition to validating the design and functionality of your medical device, there are a myriad of testing requirements needed to ensure your product reaches the end user intact. From primary seal testing through pallet-level transit testing, our state-of-the-art Package Testing Facility provides complete capabilities for evaluating every aspect of your package and labelling configurations, to ensure your product will survive the rigors of being transported around the world.

Madison Safety's state-of-the-art package testing facility is equipped to perform functional testing, material testing and shelf-life testing of primary, secondary and shipping configurations. We also provide a wide range of physical property testing in order to characterize and assess alternate packaging materials.

Perhaps the most critical aspect of packaging for a terminally sterilized device is the barrier seal that maintains the sterility of the product. Madison Safety can assess the sterile seal integrity of virtually any device and/or packaging configuration, whether that barrier is maintained at the plunger interface of a pre-filled syringe, a heat-sealed pouch, blister or a thermoformed tray with a Tyvek lid. We have the most appropriate technology and capabilities for your specific application, including:

Bacterial Challenges Testing

Dye Penetration or Dye Leak Testing

Vacuum Decay

High Voltage Leak Detection

Helium Leak and Oxygen Headspace Analysis

Burst and Bubble Testing

Consumer Goods Packaging

Products are subject to climatic as well as mechanical stress during transport and storage. We offer tests to assess the effects on the packaged product through various thermal, humidity and corrosion tests as well as vibration and impact tests.

Our long-term experience and versatile testing capabilities provide solutions for various transport conditions and product packaging design. For packaging testing, our testing laboratory is accredited and has a comprehensive range of testing methods in accordance with different standards.

Testing Services

We are already helping our customers in the product development phase and together we will find out what kind of burdens the product will face during its life cycle.

  • Defining environmental conditions for different transport conditions

  • Definition of the testing requirements

  • Designing testing programmes

Climatic Test for Packaging

The packaged product is exposed to various climatic conditions during transportation and storage, and their impact on the product as well as the protective properties of the packaging can be assessed by thermal, thermal and humidity tests and by rain tests.

During the tests, we monitor changes in the temperature and relative humidity even inside the package. It is also possible to add a sensor inside the equipment in the package or into the package itself. In majority of cases, the humidity is monitored by following the humidity changes in the humidity chamber. On the basis of the measurement results obtained, we evaluate the protective properties of the packaging.

Package Vibration Test and Impact Testing

During transportation, the product is usually subjected to the worst mechanical stress, so the design of the transport packaging must take into account the impact of possible drops and vibrations transmitted from the transport platforms.

We simulate the mechanical stresses caused by different means of transport with the test equipment, while measuring the attenuation characteristics of the packaging and the accelerations to the product. After the vibration and/or dropping test, the damages at and in the package are evaluated.

Dangerous Goods Packaging

Madison Safety’s provides the services needed for the certification and testing of packaging for dangerous goods.

Our laboratories in Finland (Espoo, Vihti, Tampere) are an authorized ADR Inspection Body by Tukes - Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency.

The packaging intended to be used in the transportation of dangerous goods must be tested and approved by an Inspection Body. The dangerous goods packaging can be boxes, bottles, canisters etc., intermediate bulk container (IBCs) and large packaging items, for example.

At Madison Safety’s, we have the possibility to test packaging products up to a 3,000 litres IBC. The material of the packaging product can be steel, aluminium, wood, fibreboard, plastics, metal, paper, glass and combinations of it, for example.

The UN tests of the packaging products include:

  • chemical compatibility

  • drop test

  • leakproof test

  • internal pressure (hydraulic) test

  • stacking test

  • permeability test

  • vibration test

  • bottom lift test

  • top lift test

Our services cover the requirements set in the following rules and regulations for packaging products of dangerous goods:

  • Finnish Transport Safety Agency Regulation on the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road/Rail

  • Regulations by the Finnish Maritime Administration on the transport of dangerous goods as bulk cargo by sea

  • ADR, European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road

  • RID, Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail

  • IMDG CODE, International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code

  • ICAO, Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air

  • IATA, Dangerous Goods Regulations, for the Air Transport
